Abstract

Transitional justice is one of the challenges of political transitions in both Brazil and South Africa. Based on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa, and the Peasant Commission on Truth in Brazil, the proposed seminar intends discussing which are the contributions that these two Commissions could bring to mind transitional justice in both countries. South Africa is recognized globally for the experience of reconciliation and truth in the post-apartheid era. How did the South African Commission engage with land issues? How have memory, truth and land been addressed by the Commission? Which processes have been built in relation to land rights within the context of transitional justice of South Africa, post- TRC? In Brazil, the proposition of the Peasant Commission of Truth incorporated into the political process of the National Truth Commission the peasant presence. How was the process of incorporation of the peasents in the discussion of memory and truth? What are the contributions that the South African and Brazilian processes could provide to thinking about transitional justice in both countries?
